Who is this assessment for?

Is this right for me?

If you've been wondering whether Autism could help explain some of your experiences, such as how you communicate, relate to others, process sensory information or cope with change, an assessment can provide greater understanding and clarity.

  • You'd like to make sense of experiences that have puzzled you for a long time
  • You're not certain and want to explore it properly with a specialist
  • You'd like clear, personal recommendations for what could help

You don't need to be certain. The Initial Assessment Consultation is a good first step if you're unsure.

ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised) gathers a detailed developmental history. ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition) is a structured observational assessment of social communication, interaction and behaviours relevant to Autism.

Where possible, developmental information is obtained from a parent, relative or another person who knew you during childhood. Previous school or medical records may also help. This is always discussed with you and done with your consent.

ADI-R and ADOS-2 findings are never treated as stand-alone results: the conclusion is reached by bringing all the available evidence together.

Common questions

Quick answers

How do I know whether I need an Autism, ADHD or Combined assessment?

You don't have to work this out alone. The Initial Assessment Consultation is an online conversation of around 30 minutes to understand your concerns and establish whether an Autism, ADHD or Combined pathway may be appropriate. It is not a diagnostic assessment.

What happens during an assessment?

Includes both the ADI-R and the ADOS-2, together with a detailed developmental and clinical history and supporting information.

The components are explained under Learn more above. Our How It Works page shows every step.

Do you need to speak to a parent or family member for an adult assessment?

Where possible and appropriate, we may seek information from a parent, relative, partner or another person who knows you well. For Autism assessment, developmental information from someone who knew you in childhood can be particularly helpful.

This is always discussed with you first and only happens with your consent. You do not need a parent to be available before you enquire.

What if there is limited information about my childhood?

A lack of detailed childhood records, or a parent who is not available, does not automatically prevent you from enquiring. Your clinician will look at your circumstances individually and explore what developmental information is available.

Other sources can include school reports, medical or previous assessment records, another relative or person who knew you when you were younger, your own account of your development, and other relevant documents. The quality and limitations of the available information are considered when reaching a conclusion.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. After the assessment and clinical review you receive a comprehensive written report, covering the reason for assessment, relevant history, the assessment components used, findings, the clinical conclusion, strengths and areas of need, individualised recommendations and suggested next steps.

A feedback appointment is offered to explain the findings and answer your questions.

What is included in the assessment fee?

The Fees page lists what an assessment may include. Exact components depend on the assessment pathway and individual circumstances.
