Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions. Can't find yours? Just ask.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. A GP referral is not required to make a private enquiry or to begin the YASS assessment pathway. You, or your child's parent or carer, can contact YASS Healthcare directly.

Where relevant, you may wish to share your completed report with your GP or other professionals involved in your care.

How do I know whether I need an Autism, ADHD or Combined assessment?

You don't have to work this out alone. The Initial Assessment Consultation is an online conversation of around 30 minutes to understand your concerns and establish whether an Autism, ADHD or Combined pathway may be appropriate. It is not a diagnostic assessment.

Is the consultation a diagnostic assessment?

No. The Initial Assessment Consultation is an initial online discussion of around 30 minutes. It is not a diagnostic assessment, and no diagnosis is made during it. It helps you understand the process and whether an Autism, ADHD or Combined pathway may be appropriate.

Do you assess both children and adults?

Yes. YASS Healthcare provides Autism and ADHD assessments for children, young people and adults.

What happens during an assessment?

Your clinician gathers relevant background information, talks with you (and your child, where relevant) and uses appropriate specialist assessment approaches. The information is then carefully considered and brought together in a written report. Our How It Works page shows each step.

How long does an assessment take?

The length of the process varies according to the assessment pathway, appointment availability and how quickly relevant supporting information can be obtained. Once your pathway has been established, we can give you a clearer indication of the expected timescale.

Are appointments online or face-to-face?

YASS Healthcare operates primarily online and by appointment. Face-to-face appointments can be arranged in advance where appropriate.

Will you need information from my child's school?

Where appropriate, and with consent, information will be sought from your child's school, nursery or college. This may include questionnaires and information about communication, attention, behaviour, learning, social interaction and functioning in the educational environment. Existing SEN/EHCP information, school reports or previous professional assessments may also be considered.

School information helps us understand your child across different environments. It is not needed in every case.

Do you need to speak to a parent or family member for an adult assessment?

Where possible and appropriate, we may seek information from a parent, relative, partner or another person who knows you well. For Autism assessment, developmental information from someone who knew you in childhood can be particularly helpful.

This is always discussed with you first and only happens with your consent. You do not need a parent to be available before you enquire.

What if there is limited information about my childhood?

A lack of detailed childhood records, or a parent who is not available, does not automatically prevent you from enquiring. Your clinician will look at your circumstances individually and explore what developmental information is available.

Other sources can include school reports, medical or previous assessment records, another relative or person who knew you when you were younger, your own account of your development, and other relevant documents. The quality and limitations of the available information are considered when reaching a conclusion.

What happens after the assessment?

You'll have an opportunity to talk through the findings and recommendations, and to discuss appropriate next steps.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. After the assessment and clinical review you receive a comprehensive written report, covering the reason for assessment, relevant history, the assessment components used, findings, the clinical conclusion, strengths and areas of need, individualised recommendations and suggested next steps.

A feedback appointment is offered to explain the findings and answer your questions.

What happens if I do not meet diagnostic criteria?

Assessment is intended to provide understanding, not to guarantee a diagnosis. If the evidence does not support a diagnosis of Autism and/or ADHD, the findings will still be explained at your feedback appointment and documented in your report.

Where appropriate, the report identifies strengths, areas of difficulty or support need, other explanations worth considering, and recommendations or next steps.

What is included in the assessment fee?

The Fees page lists what an assessment may include. Exact components depend on the assessment pathway and individual circumstances.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes. You can spread the cost with 0% finance: 0% interest to start, flexible monthly options personalised to your budget, and confirmed in writing before your assessment begins. Ask us about payment options and we'll talk you through them.
